What does the sun or moon icon mean?
The sun means it is currently daytime in that location. The moon means it is currently nighttime there.
Why is India's time zone 30 minutes off instead of a full hour, like most places?
India uses a single time zone for the whole country, set at UTC+5:30 (five and a half hours ahead of UTC), based on the 82.5°E meridian, which runs near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. That line sits roughly at the geographic east-west center of the country. A full-hour offset would have pushed solar noon noticeably off from clock noon on one side of the country or the other, so a half-hour offset was chosen as the compromise, keeping the sun closer to its highest point around midday nationwide. This became India's official single time zone on September 1, 1947, replacing several separate regional times that had been in use, including Bombay Time and Calcutta Time. India does not observe daylight saving time, so this offset stays the same all year. A handful of other countries use similar half- or quarter-hour offsets for the same kind of reason, including Iran (UTC+3:30), Afghanistan (UTC+4:30), and Nepal, which uses an unusual 45-minute offset (UTC+5:45).
What is UTC, and where did it come from?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the reference point every time zone in the world is measured against — including the "UTC Converter" tab on this page. It grew out of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which became the world's time standard after the 1884 International Meridian Conference set the Greenwich meridian in England as the global zero point. GMT worked well for over a century, but it was based on the Earth's rotation, which turns out to be very slightly irregular. Once cesium atomic clocks arrived in the 1950s, timekeepers could measure time far more precisely than the Earth actually rotates. UTC was developed through the 1960s to combine that atomic precision with the Earth-based time everyone was used to, and the name itself was a deliberate compromise between English ("CUT") and French ("TUC") abbreviations. UTC in its modern form, including periodic "leap seconds" that keep it in sync with the Earth's rotation, became the official global standard on January 1, 1972. Today it's maintained using hundreds of atomic clocks around the world, and it's the backbone behind aviation schedules, GPS, international finance, and internet timestamps — anywhere the whole world needs to agree on one shared clock.
